experience, however — wonderful field hunter and experienced timber racer Roses and Drums, appropriately selected as Hoffman’s first hunter-’chaser fell as the result of an apparent heart attack, dying immediately and crushing Hoffman’s pelvis in the process.
“I came back, though,” against all odds, Hoffman said with a laugh. “Lounge Lizard was my second horse. He carried me well last year, and took care of me in my real ‘first’ racing season.”
Trained by former owner Bay Cockburn in Hamilton, Lounge Lizard won four of his ‘95 timber division starts. ‘The only bad race we had was when he fell at Old Dominion after winning three weeks prior at Warrenton,” Hoffman said. “1 didn’t sit on a horse for those three weeks in between. I feel like he fell because my fitness had suffered in the interim.”
At 6 feet, Hoffman is one of the larger jockeys on the circuit. “My body wants to be 165 pounds,” he said. “But this year, 1 hope to ride over hurdles, too, so I’m dieting and exercising especially hard.” Seven Corners’ weights range upwards of 180 pounds, so weight control was not previously a problem, though fitness always is. “I go to the gym religiously,” Hoffman said. “On
