Some inexperienced trainers try to put the lead cloth on top of the number, or fail to allow enough room for the whole number to show. “That is very important,” Hanback added. “The stewards have to know who’s who at every part of the race.”
Five minutes, or so, before post time, Hanback sends the horses out on the course to warm up and get to the starting position. “It is important to synchronize your watch with the other officials,” she concluded.
The Starter
After horses leave the paddock, they jog or canter up the racecourse to warm up for their race. A few minutes worth of stretching and limbering is all they get before riders must report to the starter to begin their event.
Several professional horsemen perform the. starting duties at Virginia race meets, including T. Roy Wright and Gerry Newman who take care of most of the spring’s races.
