Mrs. Sallie Helen Ward, 99, a retired federal government employee, who spent most of her 35 years of service assigned to the Army Quartermaster Corp, died Feb. 18 of natural causes at the Susan B. Miller Nursing Home in Woodstock.
Mrs. Ward was born in Bloomsburg, Pa. on April, 4, 1896. Shortly thereafter, the family relocated to Danville where they operated a tailoring business.
Mrs. Ward was educated in the Danville public school. She continued her education at Harrisonburg State Teachers College (now James Madison University) and graduated from Averett College in Danville.
She was married to the late Jesse L. Ward, a partner in Ward and Paul, a court reporting business in Washington D.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Ward met at the Calvary Baptist Church, Washington, D.C. where she served as a past president of the Florence M. Brown class and as a Deaconess.
Upon retirement, the Wards moved to Washington where they operated Echo Hill farm, a cattle ar)d sheep operation.
Mrs. Ward was an avid cook and enjoyed gardening.
As a member of the Marshall Chapter #101, Order of the Eastern Star, Warrenton, her last position- was Associate Matron.
Her survivors include a sister, Margaret Z. Raymond, of Warrenton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Other siblings who pre-deceased her are Robert Zabawa, Eugene Zabawa, Emma Zabawa Masloff and James J. Zabawa.
Services were conducted at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton on Wednesday, Feb. 21 by Rev. J. Richard winter and the Marshall Chapter #101, Order of the Eastern Star.
Interment was in the Highland Burial Park, Danville.
