A number of changes will be realized this spring racing season, both in Virginia point-to-points and in hunt meetings run under National Steeplechase Association rules.
Heading the point-to-point variations is a new weight scale for all participating race meets. Formerly ‘ choosing their own requirements, point-to-points this year will use a consistent scale, week to week, with maidens carrying the same at each meet, for instance, rather than fluctuating from 150 one week to 165 the next. Further weight changes include penalties to horses that have won sanctioned races in the past two seasons, a change that favors pointto-point horses and amateur competition. Sanctioned horses can still use point-to-points as preps for hunt meets, but prior winners will carry up to six pounds extra.
The foxhunters’ series, which was this year to require that horses have hunted nine times during this season with a recognized pack, will only require six hunting days to be eligible due to inclement weather all over the east coast. Foxhunters will still be required to dress in formal hunting attire on race day, but racing tack will be allowed.
Novice riders will be required to attend an official course walk with an experienced rider’s representative prior to each of the novice series races. The course
