through April 20, area hunt clubs hold hunter pace events, often run in conjuction with a club’; pointto-point race, but sometimes as a stand-alone competition. Most hunts have several different divisions for subscribers to recognized packs, junior riders and many have a division open to all.
Fast time is counted at some pace events, with a separate division made up of those riders and horses who are often looking to make a move to steeplechasing competition or into old-fashioned point-to-point events. Old-fashioneds are run like steeplechasing of old — where competitors may choose their own routes to get literally from point to point to point. Courses usually have two or three mandatory check points but otherwise are left to riders’ own choices.
Hunter pace courses are always flagged. Both hunter paces and old-fashioned races are usually over courses of about three miles over natural hunt territory.
