Dr. Gangel said the Virginia Standards for Accrediting Schools, which was adopted in July 1997, and evaluates the schools solely by student performance on their standardized tests, will be administered for the first time this year.

The grade’s average test score will be compared to other schools in Virginia. A student’s test score will determine passage to the next grade and even graduation.

Jack Raines, high school principal, indicated the high school handbook is updated as required by state mandates. He said the handbook changes explain thatstudents are required to take more responsibility in completing their homework. Incomplete homework will be finished during the resource block or before sports practice after school.

Also, incomplete grades will no longer appear on report cards, instead, the grade will appear as a “F” until it is completed and then changed.

Mr. Raines also said he was trying to get volunteers to greet visitors to the school at the front door. Several incidents . that occurred last year were “scary,” he said.

Raye Tupper, elementary school principal, indicated the handbook for the elementary school will have a new cover. She said the school goals are not included because they are being worked on with parents and are not yet available.
