Why is Tom Kirk so loyal to Lord Fairfax Community College? One incident, in particular speaks volumes.
During Kirk’s last semester studying business at Lord Fairfax, he needed to take a government course that wasn’t available.
He approached Dr. William H. McCoy, then the president of the college, with his predicament. “What can I do?,” he asked McCoy.
After considering the situation, McCoy replied, “You are going to be my student.”
“I got my government assignments directly from Dr. McCoy, and met with him at his office for an hour-and-a-half each month to go over my work,” said Kirk. “I was impressed that the president of a college would take so much interest in a student.
“That sold me on Lord Fairfax Community College right there,” he said.
Kirk, 55, of Warrenton, is the executive vice president and trust officer at F&M Peoples Bank.
His connections with Lord Fairfax run wide and deep.
After 20 years with the Intelligence branch of the U.S. Navy Kirk retired and was ready to try something else.
