Helen William, head of transportation, spoke about field trips and the problem with cars illegally passing school buses at the school. Ron Maleka, Jackson district representative, suggested a VDOT sign stating a 15 mph speed limit on School Lane, since unposted roads are understood to have a 55 mph speed limit according to state law.
A pilot program is being introduced for general leave and, according to Dr. Gangel, it is going to be used on a trial basis. A total of 1.25 days per month are accrued by employees and all leave will be accumulated as general leave.
Susan McCarthy, secretary and treasurer of the PTO, presented examples of gift wrap that is offered by a professional fundraiser, Institutional Finance Services. She said this will be tried on a trial basis, but presented it because of the questions about the quality of items sold through the PTO in the past. She also mentioned the approval and development of a Virginia Commission for the Arts program for grades 4 and 5. It requires one-half community funding and she is working with groups such as Headwaters to raise funds. This is the first time parents have submitted a grant proposal, Mrs. McCarthy said.
