What is a community college? And what should it represent to the community it serves?
In defining the role of a community college is important to first consider how community colleges differ from other institutions of higher learning, such as universities, four-year and junior colleges.
It is also important to recognize how community colleges and four-year institutions work together for the benefit of students.
Student body — Other institutions of higher learning are concerned — almost exclusively — with the immediate group enrolled there. Community colleges are different, in that they offer their instruction to the entire population in their geographic area.
Location — In most cases, other institutions are generally located far from the home of the student. They are an entity unto themselves, with the students living on the campus.
Community colleges are located within the community they serve, available to all qualified residents. Students can live at home while attending their community college, often assisting their families by holding down a part-time or full-time job.
