Following is a time line noting the significant milestones in LFCC’s development of a Fauquier Campus:
April, 1988— Germanna and Lord Fairfax community colleges began exploring the possibility of expanding educational opportunities in Fauquier County.
Local business and government leaders met with presidents of the two community colleges to discuss the feasibility of establishing an educational venture in Warrenton.
It was determined that a facility of at least 3,000 square feet in size would be needed to provide sufficient administrative and classroom space.
It was estimated that the county would need to provide $20,000 to $30,000 in “seed money” to pay for start-up and first-year operational expenses.
September, 1988 — On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the first classes offered under the auspices of the joint venture by Germanna and Lord Fairfax community colleges began at “The Bam.”
Use of The Bam was provided by Bob Sowder Enterprises rent-free. Sowder also contributed some $90,000 in renovations to make the facility suitable for educational purposes.
