the present counties of Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah and Warren, as well as a substantial portion of West Virginia.
Lord Fairfax successfully adjusted to life on the Virginia frontier, and was a respected force in the formation of the new American world.
He befriended many persons, including George Washington, whom he retained as a surveyor. He supported General Braddock, and was a close colleague of “King” Carter, William Byrd, and governors Gooch, Dinwiddie and Dunmore.
Lord Fairfax died at age 88 in 1781 at Greenway Court. He was buried was at Christ Church in Winchester.
His name and legacy continue today in Frederick and Fauquier counties, with the existence of the two community college campuses that bear his name.
