Blackberry — or cherry, or strawberry picking combine very well with bird song listening. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo made guttural announcements while Lee and I picked strawberries last year at Jordan River Farm near Flint Hill. No other bird punctuated the hot morning with sound. At Hartland Orchards near Markham, I was serenaded by the complex and elegant song of an Orchard Oriole while I picked sour cherries.
My bucket is filled, or partly filled, with more than berries after a morning of picking. I wish I could get the rich mix of bird song in those little jars along with the shimmering jelly.
