He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1987 from Shenandoah University. He got about halfway through the MBA program at Shenandoah before deciding he had been a student long enough.
Even after completing his studies, Kirk remained involved with Lord Fairfax, serving for a time as an adjunct professor in the business department.
“My experience at Lord Fairfax was unique,” said Kirk recently. “I had taken courses at many different schools while in the Navy, but the atmosphere and the level of interest in the students shown by the professors was unlike anything I’d seen before ... for their first two years, kids probably get as good or better an education at Lord Fairfax as they would at a major four-year institution.”
Kirk began working in Warrenton in 1983, and moved his family there a year later. His connection with LFCC followed him to Fauquier, as the local satellite campus began to grow.
“At that time, we were just getting the ball rolling,” Kirk recalled. “We were teaching classes at night at Fauquier High School, at the bank, or any other place we could get. Then Bob Sowder came along with The Bam,’ and things just went on from there.”
