The Postal Service Board of Governors has voted to file a request to raise the price for mailing a First-Class letter by a penny, and the average cost of postage for all types of ■domestic mail by 4.5 percent.
Postmaster Linda Lawler said, “We anticipate the Postal Rate Commission will once again review the case for about nine months, and that it will take effect in May 1998. This is the smallest increase we have ever requested, less than half the rate of inflation during the three-and-a-half year term of the 32-cent stamp, the second longest period of rate stability in the 26 year history of the Postal Service.”
