Alfred Kummli of Huntly was elected chairman of the board of Lord Fairfax Community College’s Education Foundation in 1996.
He has served on the foundation board, which is responsible for fund raising activities, since 1993.
“Lord Fairfax is blessed to have Mr. Kummli’s help,” said Jennifer Sager, LFCC coordinator of public information. "He and his wife, Klara, are extremely generous benefactors.
Kummli encourages others to come forward and become involved themselves. With typical modesty, he said, "I hope we can do a lot more. We’re not finished yet.”
The Foundation board is currently hard at work on the “Dollars for Scholars” fund raising gala for the Fauquier campus Sept. 13.
Working on the gala has been a real experience, said Kummli. “I am awed by the others on the committee. It’s unbelievable how quickly they arranged things.”
He also compliments the school’s leaders. “Without them Lord Fairfax wouldn’t be what it is today,” he said.
Kummli has always been a believer in the importance of higher education. He has personally helped by providing scholarship funds and talks with pride about the large number of LFCC students from Rappahannock County.
Kummli says he has lived the American dream. He grew up in Basel, Switzerland, where he attended college and earned a building degree.
He joined a large construction company that had been in business for 380 years and noted that it is very difficult to own your own business of any size in Switzerland.
