There was a need to prevent such markets from being too close to each other for competition reasons. Henry of Bracton, an English judge back in the mid-thirteenth century, 750 years ago, ruled that no market was to be within seven miles of an older market as it would be a "nuisance." It would draw off business from the older market. In those days, a reasonable day's journey was 20 miles. Bracton stated that it took 1/3 of a day, or seven miles, to get to court or market, 1/3 of a day to transact business, and 1/3 of a day to get home before dark.
