How do we cope with this stress?

The first move is to become aware that you are causing your own depressed feelings. You are doing this to yourself — not the job, not the commute, not the children, not the school. It is your reaction that is putting you down, not the event itself.

You are perceiving the situation as a negative one that you cannot handle. You may be worrying about an upcoming wedding or promotion.

What is needed is what psychologists call "refraining" — learning to perceive the world in a non-threatening way and examining opportunities j that life has subtly presented to you. ,|

Caught in a traffic jam? This is a gift of time to listen to your favorite radio program.

Been downsized? Maybe it's an opportunity to go back to school — no matter what your age.

No one has said this reframing is easy. Nothing worthwhile is. But keep reminding yourself that, despite appearances to the contrary, you are in charge of your own life.
