There are some helpful books on meditation. One of the best is' Lawrence LeShan’s “How to Meditate.” Another well-known book is Herbert Benson’s “The Relaxation Response.” Thich Nat Hanh’s books, especially “Being Peace,” are also excellent.

Most meditators believe that you should have a teacher to properly instruct you in meditation. This is because problems and questions regarding technique can arise, and it is good to have guidance and someone to answer questions and give encouragement. It’s important to feel comfortable with your teacher. Teachers may be found by checking ads in the local paper or on the Web, through yoga instructors, or by word of mouth.

One of the m,ost important pieces of advice I received from my teacher was to stick with meditation, no matter what, for at least six months. Good advice — because, like most meditators, I had questions and frustrations along the way.

But learning meditation 25 years ago in that little house on the hill has been a wonderful gift to myself, perhaps the best I ever received.

James Seder is the director of Positive Changes Hypnosis in Warrenton, and has been in counseling and hypnosis practice for more than 20 years.

He also teaches meditation. He can be reached at 347-3800.
