that the best computer monitor arrangement she ever saw was one buried in the desktop.
But, as Blaser explained, "Sometimes the changes involve other factors, like pay, or seniority. Most people can't take three weeks off to rest, or stop doing what they're doing.
"So then I tell them, let's set reasonable goals. We can't eliminate your pain, but we can manage it, with more breaks, lumbar rolls or better shoes.
"It's a management of the situation, rather than a cure.”
The perils of work
It's because of the realities of the workplace that Blaser also conducts "work simulations" — repeating daily routines so that the muscles that perform them will grow strong enough to bear the repetition.
For instance, a truck driver's bad knees were the result of years of climbing way up into the truck cab. Blaser's facility had a table that happened to be the same height, so the driver's physical therapy was to step up on the table over and over.
For an airline attendant suffering from years of pushing a 300-pound cart and leaning over to hand snacks to the guy in the window seat, Blaser set up a cart with approximate weights. The attendant learned some new ways to safely bend and twist, push and pull.
"It’s a joy when someone comes back and says, 'I worked all day and didn't have a headache,' " said Blaser.
