Treatment
Traditionally, IBS has been a hard syndrome to treat. Previously prescribed therapies have included bowel anti-spasm drugs like Bentyl or Levsin; anti-diarrheal agents (but overuse can also make IBS worse); and antidepressants to help with emotional issues.
But a new drug, Lotrenox, has been shown to be very effective in reducing both abdominal pain and diarrhea.

When to see a doctor
You should see your health care provider whenever you are concerned about your symptoms. But symptoms that can be dangerous — like blood in your stool, fever, weight loss, and persistent abdominal pain and diarrhea — should be evaluated.
