We can be stressed out by physical pain or physical disability. We can be under stress as we study for a difficult exam or try to meet an occupational deadline. The rigors of divorce or the death of a loved one or the disappearance of a child can put us under an almost unbearable stress.
And yet — while there are those who find it necessary to end up under inpatient or outpatient care following such events, others don’t. Why is this?
The answer is simply that it is our reaction to stress which causes disorders, not the stress itself.
