It’s not easy, is it? Many of us cannot get to 10 even once without extraneous thoughts intruding. It is amazing how undisciplined our minds really are.

Why meditate?

I often encourage friends and clients to try meditation and am often met with the same responses:

“Why would I spend 20-40 minutes a day just sitting?”

“It seems like it would be boring.”

“I don’t have the time.”

Or, “I’m not a religious person.”

I meditate for a number of reasons. Meditation helps us to gain control over our minds. It is a way of learning to focus our thoughts. As we have just seen, that can be a difficult achievement.

Meditation is relaxing. That is no small benefit in this age of frenetic activity and high stress. We become more calm and centered as we practice. The challenges of daily life seem more manageable, relationships seem easier, and there is an overall feeling of peace and tranquility.
