1 housands ot Americans live with a group of symptoms doctors call IBS, or irritable bowel syndrome. One in nine school children will suffer a painful and sometimes embarrassing episode of IBS between now and Christmas.
Otherwise known as "spastic colon," IBS can vary from mildly annoying occasional gas and loose stool, to crippling, daily, incapacitating pain and uncontrollable diarrhea. IBS is called a mobility disorder, because the gas and stool move more quickly through the bowel than normally.
It has been traditionally frustrating for both doctors and patients, because there are no identifying tests, and endoscopic examination of the colon reveals no abnormality. Because stress is a major aggravating factor, many patients have been referred to psychiatrists.
