Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hall of Old Hollow recently returned from a trip to the United Kingdom where they visited the Isle of Skye, the Western Isles of Harris and Lewis, and parts of the Highlands and Borders region of Scotland. Before returning home they also attended the International Sheep Dog TVials, held this year in Armathwaite in the north of England.
The "International" is the World Series of sheep dog trials. On an immense course resembling the sheep herding farms of Britain, two lots of ten sheep are released about 800 yards from a Border Collie dog and it's handler.
The dog must go out on the right or left side as instructed and gather the first lot through a gate, then return on the other side to gather the second lot through a different gate and unite the two lots. The dog must then bring the sheep to the shepherd, drive them several hundred yards back through two more gates before bringing them into a shedding ring where five marked sheep must be separated from the others and then guided into a small pen.
Except for the shedding and penning, the shepherd must remain at his post and the dog is directed over these great distances by whistles and calls. Many dogs fail to complete the course in the 30 minute time limit, particularly when the sheep fail to cooperate.
One of the best things about the International is the people, both competitors and spectators. They are mostly farmers and shepherds with Border Collies of their own and stories to tell of life in the hills tending sheep for a living. There are many local
