onenanaoan is a pane to De enjoyed time and again, and in all season. The nor- i mally crisp, clear days of September and November bring with them their own "magic".
In September, there just a hint of fall in the air. Deer begin to grow their dark gray winter coats, and bucks begin to rub velvet off their antlers and polish their racks on sassafras and other small trees in preparation for mating season.
Trees have begin their color change, and bright red Virginia Creeper vines brighten rock faces and tree trunks throughout the park. Roadside flowers, including varieties of aster and golden rod, contrast with white, purple and yellow blossoms.
Dogwoods and spice bush display bright red berries, and mountain ash berries, an unusually brilliant orange, are visible at the highest elevations. Many species of fern are browning; a fine contrast to the still green trees above them.
As days grow shorter, sunrise and sunset watching become a popular past time at the nearly 70 overlooks along the Skyline Drive. Each day brings a new sign of the transition from summer to autumn.
