In addition to the many local pieces, or "Turf' paintings, the "Surf' portion of the show reflects Wagner's love for the ocean and other bodies of water. One particularly evocative painting features a trio of wild Chincoteague ponies on a misty afternoon, and his signature show piece, titled "Down Comforters," shows a Canada Goose couple watchfully herding their young goslings into the water.
Birds and animals are a common theme in much of the work, and the menagerie includes ducks, horses, cows, geese, a kitty, an egret, a swan and a seagull.
A resident of Washington, for the past 13 years, Wagner has spent the better part of his artistic career producing illustrations that are informative or educational in nature. His biggest body of work is 128 paintings in the permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian
