Canal. This was an offshoot of the Rappahannock Canal, and it ended at Castleton.
The road to Waterloo still exists in the form of Route 613 leading out of the county off Route 211, just at the Culpeper County line. So does its bridge, built in 1878. In the 1920s, both became part of Lee Highway for about ten years.
The canal era faded when railroads gained the ascendancy. For Rappahannock County, the farm-to-market routes, the turnpikes, spread out from the county like a star burst. Traders made their way over Chester Gap to Front Royal and the Virginia Midland Railroad. They crossed Thornton Gap to Luray and the Shenandoah
