Fisher’s Juggernaut II: French-bred jumper Juggernaut II was crowned America’s timber champion in 1980, barely lost to Cup winner Sam Son of a Gun in 1979. Fisher’s 17-year-old son Jack got the call to ride in the ‘81 renewal. (Yes, Saluter’s Jack Fisher.) Juggernaut II made a bold late move and pulled off to win by eight lengths from Paul’s Trumpet. This was the first of Fisher’s nine Gold Cup victories as a rider. Fisher has to a large extent retired from race riding as of this spring season, so his record run will probably stop at nine.
• 1991 — Mr. Oliver Keelan’s Joe’s OK: Jockey (and now leading trainer) Sanna Neilson became the first woman to ride the winner of the prestigious Virginia Gold Cup. Daughter of Paddy Neilson (winning jockey in 1975 aboard for Chapel Street’s second Gold Cup score,) Sanna Neilson guided Keelan’s gelding to this, his third victory at Great Meadow. Joe’s OK also won the 1990 Virginia Silver Cup maiden timber and followed that up
