Before each race, riders meet with officials to check on last minute course changes, above. At right, a horse has his tongue ‘tied’ with a soft flannel cloth; tying the tongue ensures that it does not interfere with breathing in the heat of competition. It does not hurt the horse, and most runners have this done every time they race.
