there’s a crude language and trademark rule, which is implemented if the name chosen is questionable.
Computers are sometimes to blame, as are the people spelling the names out to them. The great naming game computer often spits out a likeness but not quite what the owner ordered.
Stallion and classic winner Deputed Testamony is a prime example. It should have been “Deputed Testimony” of course. And Thelightfan/istic was typed, instead of the correct TTielightfan/crstic. And so it goes.
However, some names will never be forgotten, and therefore can never be reused. The legendary Secretariat’s name has forever been retired, as is Man O’ War, Redrurn, Ruffian and Native (and Northern) Dancer.
Unlike the team jerseys of famous human athletes, famous horses don’t have their numbers retired — just their names.
