Many of the pony racers seen each weekend running their little hearts out are going to be the top jump jockeys of the future. History proves it.
For instance, last year’s National Steeplechase Association leading jockey, and Fauquier’s very own, Gus Brown started his own race riding career in the pony divisions.
Other champion riders who began on ponies include leading female jockey Blythe Miller; her brother Chip; top trainers (and former jockeys) Chuck Lawrence, Ricky Hendriks, Sanna Neilson; jockeys Leigh Offutt, Sean Clancy, Pat Cooney; and Wyck Cushny (who just left the pony ranks).
The definition of a pony is an equine under the height of 14.2 hands at the withers; a hand is 4 inches.
