In 1991, the elder Neilson rode in the same Maryland Hunt Cup race as his talented daughter.
“I was a sad eighth in that race,” he said. “I wasn’t really thinking about how great it is to ride with and against my daughter. However, when she crossed the finish first I was very proud of her accomplishment.”
Sanna Neilson’s older sister Kathy is also very happy for her. After a short stint in a nonhorse career, the 35 year old Kathy has fallen back into the horse business; her small public stable is starting to take off, too.
“Sanna is very determined and focussed, that’s why she is able to do so well,” Kathy Neilson said. “She’s humble and never lets her successes go to her head. She didn’t even write an acceptance speech in 1998.
“She has a great support system with family and friends and women really need that to succeed in this sport. We are all very proud of her.”
No sibling rivalry here — the two girls frequently find themselves training horses in the same races.
“We are like soul sisters and support each other all the time,” Kathy Neilson said. “If she can’t go to a race I help her assistants out and vice versa.”
