Though he won’t be dancing the big number this year — for the first time in seven — the biggest name on the marquee will still be Virginiaowned and -bred Saluter. The undisputed Gold Cup king will perform his official retirement gallop just prior to the four-mile timber classic, a fitting tribute to the only horse to ever win — get this — six consecutive Virginia Gold Cups.

From 1994-1999, Ann Stem’s bay gelding owned the Gold Cup, literally, winning six in a row over what is widely considered one of the nation’s most testing timber courses.
Saluter finished third in the Cup last year, however, with Big Wood Stable’s Priceless Room and Kinross’ Gold Quoit knocking him off the throne. That, and his advancing age — 12 this year — prompted trainer Jack Fisher to retire the four-time National Steeplechase Association champ last fall.
