The dandelion plant was also used in various ways. The plant was made into a broth that you sipped in the hopes of preventing skin disease. The blossoms were gathered and fermented into wine. This was used as a toxic which was thought to stimulate the flow of bile and would cleanse the liver.

When the dandelion flowers go to seed it becomes a pod of white puff. The seeds are carried everywhere when the wind blows. It is said the plants were spread throughout much of the world because when the maidens blew the seeds from the pods, they would gain some sign as to their future marriage. Depending on how many seeds were left on the pod determined the number of years before she would marry.

So as you remove the dandelions from your yard this spring, remember they have served many purposes throughout the years.
