spring cnase season gets underway: purses are healthy, entries are strong, capable jockeys are plentiful, corporate sponsorships are up and attendance is topping record levels.
The May 5 Virginia Gold Cup races are expected to benefit from the 21st century boom time.
Though entries, made through the National Steeplechase Association in Fair Hill, Md., for the day’s other six races don’t close until TUesday, May 1, nominations for the Gold Cup feature close April 24.
At that time, trainers may nominate entries to the $50,000 stake for a fee of $100. Horses nominated in this manner may start in the event for an additional $900. Trainers may make “supplementary nominations” at the time of entry, on May 1, for an extra $400 (plus the $900 total due if the horse starts.)
The nomination process, and supplemental nominations, allow a trainer to take a look at the competition before ponying up the substantial fees to enter.
Though nominations were not complete at press time, a number of horsemen had already expressed their intentions to aim their horses to the day’s headline event.
