Sally’s paintings sometimes begin by letting the paint flow where it will as she moves the paper. Then she continues the work, responding to what has been “given”. Her approach is very intuitive, disciplined by a well-developed awareness.
The paintings rarely need to clarify her idea or feeling through realistic references and that is their strength. They allow us to enter deeply and respond in our own ways. We aren’t lost because the hand that guides us in has done so with courage and gentleness, open to the painting itself, not her idea of what it should look like.
Sally is a guide who has been through this mysterious process of creativity many times and is now leading us into her experience with color and water. “January”, “Caul”, “Fishing Trip”, “Bear Mountain” and “Fire” resonate in memory and continue to delight the mind’s eye.
This show continues until May 6 at the Packing Shed Gallery, on the corner of Gay and Porter Streets. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 12:30-6 p.m.
