Until 1985, an owner had to win the Gold Cup three times to “retire” the current trophy. To make the feat harder to accomplish, the association raised the required number of wins to five.
Saluter did one better — he won the requisite five times to retire the Cup for his owner, and then put Stem one up on a second Cup retirement with his 1999 win. Stem just has to own a horse, or horses, that win another four timber classics, to take another Cup home.
