goers already knew her worth before her ‘91 Gold Cup win. Just a few weeks prior to the Virginia classic win she rode a horse named Tbm Bob into the Maryland Hunt Cup’s winners’ circle, becoming one of just three women to take timber racing’s toughest event.
Neilson went on to win a second Maryland Hunt Cup, this one on Ivory Poacher in 1993, before hanging up her timber racing tack and concentrating on the business of training winners.
“I definitely would like to repeat the trainer award. Our horses were phenomenal in 1998,” she said. “We started with three wins at Aiken in the spring and finished the same way in the fall. It was a perfect way to end the season. We don’t have a huge stable, just consistent winners.”
From good stock
Much of her racing sense can be attributed to genetics. Her father Paddy Neilson is quite familiar with the world of timber.
In his 95 career wins he picked up five Grand Nationals, four at the Radnor Hunt Cups, three My Lady’s Manors, three Maryland Hunt Cups, two Pennsylvania Hunt Cups and one Virginia Gold Cup (1975).
