1971 — John W. Warner’s Annual Meeting: A full crowd of 16,000 was at Broadview the first Saturday in May to watch what was deemed the “best Gold Cup since Irish Laddie won the first race in 1922.”
For the first time in many years, two Gold Cup winners — ‘69 winner Annual Meeting and ‘70 winner King of Spades — would compete against each other. Rokeby Stables’ Chapel Street overshadowed the competition, however, coming into the race off four straight wins — and having defeated both previous Gold Cup winners.
Two-time Cup-winning ‘jockey Willie Moore allowed Chapel Street to open a 40length lead on the field but nearly went off course at the 17th fence. Moore started to ride his finish a full circuit ahead of time. Moore looked back and saw Joe Aitcheson guiding Annual Meeting, properly, towards the 18th fence and yanked Chapel Street back on course. But his rhythm was broken, and Annual Meeting took the lead at the 22nd and extended it to 3 1/2 by the wire.
