Booth M. Malone was selected as the official artist for the 2001 Virginia Gold Cup painting.
Malone, from Columbus, Ga., is widely recognized throughout the South for his portraits of adults, children and animals. He has been noted as having a “remarkable talent for capturing the animation, the fleeting moment or expression unique to his subject.”
Malone began painting professionally in 1985.
The 2001 Virginia Gold Cup painting, “You’ve just won . the Gold Cup, J.W.,” accurately depicts the exciting moment just after last year’s race when spectators, family members, owners, trainers and grooms ran to congratulate the winner of the $50,000 classic. Malone employed the use of brilliant color from the fine May day of a year ago to set the tone for the oil on canvas painting.
