Gold Cup’s not the only game in town first Saturday in May By George Rowand Times Newspapers Staff Writer About a half hour after the winner of the Virginia Gold Cup is led into the winner’s circle at Great Meadows, the horses will come onto the track at Churchill Downs in Louisville for the 127th running of the Kentucky Derby. Who will win? Well, as they say in horseracing, that depends. It depends on who has the best trip, who is peaking at the right time, who likes the track surface and which jockey has that racing angel on his shoulder, the one that whispers, “Now! Send him on now, right through that hole on the rail!
