Earning a bronze medal for her performance in the Culinary Arts competition, was senior Carrie Yingling. In addition to demonstrating knife skills, Yingling was required to prepare a chicken entree with an accompanying salad. Junior Emily Hilscher had a 4th place finish in the Food and Beverage Service competition.
District 10 secretary, Brittany Lee, who Won the District 10 Job Skills Demonstration competition; and junior Tiffany Puffenbarger, winner of the District 10 Commercial Baking competition also competed in Roanoke. Other RCHS students placing in the District competitions were junior Rebecca Oyster, 2nd place Culinary Arts and junior Robbie Swann, 3rd place Commercial Baking.
Wakefield County Day School
Third graders Stage Salute in Historical “Wax Museum.”
On Wednesday, April 20th, twelve students in the third grade at Wakefield Country Day School participated in a live wax museum to convey their knowledge of particular historical figures, with this year’s theme entitled, Salute to the Military. For the past three years, Wakefield’s third grade teacher, Christine Chatelain, has used the engaging interactive format of a “wax museum” to teach her third graders about famous historical figures, and to then share that knowledge with the school’s student body and guests. This year’s assignment began several weeks ago, with each third grader selecting a particular historical figure whose accomplishments had military significance. The students did research, and then wrote a biography on their particular character. The boys and girls also assembled costumes and built props to lend an even more authentic air to their presentations. This year’s characters included General Douglas MacArthur, Joan of Arc, President Stonewall Jackson, Clara Barton, Gandhi, Jessica Lynch, and Achilles.
Hearthstone School
Hearthstone School students went on a field trip hiking to White Oak Canyon last Tuesday, April 19. Everyone enjoyed a full day of discovering spring’s emerging flora and fauna. An icy dip in the cold mountain swimming hole on a warm day was a highlight for many who chose to partake.
Hearthstone’s annual May Day Festival will be held on May 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the school. This event includes the traditional May pole dance with plenty of food, flowers and music. Parents, friends and homeschoolers are welcome to attend. The raindate will be Tuesday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
