Now you will be walking on land owned by James H. Fletcher who, like the Millers, sold their land to the Commonwealth of Virginia to form Shenandoah National Park.
Marys Rock
After your 6/10th mile walk, the Appalachian Trail will make a sharp turn to the right. At this point, there is a short trail to the left that will take you to Marys Rock.
Here you will have a 360 degree view, including Rappahannock County to the east and the Shenandoah Valley to the west. There are only several places in Shenandoah National Park that offer a 360 degree view, and this is one of them. It is said that views from this point are unsurpassed anywhere in the park. Here there are splendid views of the Central and North Districts of the park, Massanutten Mountain, Great North Mountain and the Alleghenies to the west, and the rolling hills of the Virginia Piedmont to the east.
Geologists believe the granodiorite rock of Marys Rock is over one billion years old!
The Marys Rock tract of land was owned by J. A. Williams, R. L. Cheatham, Paul and Dolly Taylor, and A: M. and Jessie Priest. These landowners, like many others, sold their tract to form part erf Shenandoah National Park.
When you have finished with this wonderful view, retrace your steps to return to your car. The one-way distance to the first viewpoint is 8/10th mile, and the one-way distance to Marys Rock is 1.4 miles.
