Touting tourism
In a few weeks springtime will give way to summertime and the county will see ever increasing numbers of city dwellers escaping to the lure of the countryside. What this county has is beyond appealing to stressed-out, traffic terrorized, harried souls who yearn for a bit of respite and relaxation. It’s idyllic. While traditional vacation and visiting areas like Colonial Williamsburg, Mt. Vernon and Monticello are still destinations for some folks, there is a growing trend to just come to the country and chill out by visiting wineries, listening to bluegrass music, strolling through quaint boutique shops, and sampling cuisine at restaurants and country inns. Parts of southwestern Virginia are tailoring to tourism by providing set routes and planned itineraries to do just that - take in the country. Locally, the Foster Harris House is planning cycling tours which will allow guests to have a comfortable place to stay and leave their belongings while they spend their days bicycling the backroads of Rappahannock, perhaps a stop at a winery and ending the day with a fine dinner at the Inn. Sounds pretty tempting coupling exercise with the euphoria that is Rappahannock. The Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community is in the planning stages for a major art event weekend in the fall which will allow visitors to meet and greet various artists in their studios and/or at a gallery while they hopefully stay and eat in town. Rappahannock County has a steadily growing reputation as a major art destination and the launching of this artist’s studio tour will be a major step in supporting that momentum. As the tourists throng to the countryside in a few weeks, let’s all be mindful that increased people means more traffic particularly in the Ibwn of Washington with roads not designed for freeway motoring. There is a speed limit and it is posted to remind everyone that strolling pedestrians have the right of way. Let’s be the first to set the example by slowing down through town.
