Barbed wire was developed from smooth wire, which dates back to a crude beginning about 400 AD. By 1870 there was a good quality of smooth wire, but it wasn't very effective for keeping in livestock. In 1867 a couple of inventors tried making the first barbed wire by cutting notches in the smooth wire. These wires saw a modicum of success until 1868.
