of the Society and its some 200 members. Among the dedicated, volunteers who donate their time and energy to the Society are Wayne Baldwin, John Bourgeois (president), Louise van Dort (vice president), Fran Eldred (museum curator), Joan. Gannon, Ruth Kiger, Maureen Harris, Jean Norris, Pat Saltonstall, Misty Hitt (“cemetery project”), Lucia Tildy, and Arland Welch (noted local historian and long-time volunteer).
At the heart of the Society’s ability to serve the community are its important museum and library collections. With a mission to collect and preserve the history of the people and the land of Rappahannock County, the Society’s collection has grown to include a wealth of valuable information and documents covering the following areas of interest:
• Family files and bible records
• County census records from 1790 to the present time
• Abstracts of births, marriages, and deaths
• Abstracts of estate and chancery records
• Cemetery and burial records
• Published genealogies
• Local histories and manuscripts
• Newspaper and periodical archives
• Early tax records
• Artifacts and displays
The society depends heavily on volunteers among its members and friends to carry out its mission. Single membership is $25 and family membership is only $40. A quarterly newsletter includes Society updates, new library acquisitions, additions to the museum, and interesting notes on genealogy. Members also are invited to an annual picnic, usually held at an historic house or site in Rappahannock County.
Fran Eldred, a board member who chairs the Jessamine Hill benefit, urges all citizens interested in the county’s historic past and their own heritage to visit the Society headquarters and support its important work by becoming members and volunteers. Tickets and directions
Tickets for the benefit cost $20 and are available through the Rappahannock Historical Society by calling (540) 6751163 Monday through Friday Raffle tickets for a beautiful fullsized quilt depicting many Rappahannock County scenes hand-made by Florine Baldwin will also be available for purchase at $5 each. Tickets for both the event and the quilt raffle can be purchased at the Historical Society’s office anc museum at 328 Gay Street in Washington, Virginia.
Jessamine Hill is located on Jessamine Hill Lane, just of Tiger Valley Road (Route 626 and only a few miles from Little Washington and Route 211.
