In 1874, Joseph F. Glidden of Dekalb, IL., received a patent for a barbed wire that was fashioned with the help of a coffee bean grinder. He made separate barbs that were evenly spaced along a smooth wire and fastened in place with another wire. This is the form of the' barbed wire we see today. He is known as the “Father of Barbed Wire”.
