Venue, and attended the one-room school house with grades 1-7 taught by Miss Mary Bruce. Still standing on Rt.729, the school house was added onto and remodeled . into a beautiful home by Cletus Printz.
In 1943, at the age of 18, Baylus signed up with the U.S. Navy. During WWII, he served aboard the destroyer, USS McDermut (DD677), as the ship’s carpenter apprentice. His years during the war were spent mostly in the Pacific Islands and his battle station was the “first loader of a 5-inch 38 gun inside turret #1” of the USS McDermut. Baylus was awarded 10 battle stars for his service during WWII, and one of the most famous battles he and his shipmates participated in has been written about in a book entitled Afternoon of • the Rising Sun-Battle of — Leyte Gulf by Kenneth I. Friedman.
