In the early days of our country, graveyards were often placed within the churchyard. This positioning was based on the notion that, the closer you were to the church, the better your chances of getting to heaven. However, by the beginning of the nineteenth century, the “garden cemetery movement" began to take shape. The underlying feeling was that the garden cemeteries that replaced churchyards were to be places where families could visit their beloved and picnic while the children played. In some respects, this notion survives to this very day, in which cemeteries are regarded as bucolic gardens where people can go to visit with the dead in a natural setting that invites contemplation.
