He was well aware of the ambiance of the place.
The weather and other working conditions reinforced this. He said the weather, “is right there in your face, and changes from day to day. The forge is a very cold building to work in during the winter; no heat gets down your feet.
The water buckets on the floor will sometimes freeze solid and stay that way for days when there is a real cold spell; and nothing I do at the forge produces heat that travels far from the source. Most of the heat goes up the chimney.”
He noted that his forge, with its thick, stone walls and thatched roof, was a relatively cool place during the hot, humid days of summer, a surprise to visitors. Russ therefore works with the vagaries of nature immediately at hand. He said he was not like “someone who works in an office
